Eight Tongans Remain In Custody For Major Marijuana Bust

More than 3,200 cannabis plants, 20,000 seeds seized by police along with cash, firearms

NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, May 9, 2017) – Eight men remain in custody follow their arrests in connection with the seizure of a large haul of cannabis plants and seeds on 4 May, at six different bush allotments in Fou’i and Matahau.

A total of 3,222 cannabis plants with more than 20,000 cannabis seeds, and six cannabis pot plants were seized from five locations in Fo'ui and one in Matahau.

In addition, two firearms (.22 rifles), ammunition, cash and electronic devices were seized during the operation.

All of the men appeared at the Magistrate’s Court this morning 9 May, and had their case adjourned to Monday, May 15.

They have been similarly charged with possession and cultivation of cannabis, some with possession of firearms and ammunition, said Tonga Police.

The accused are between the ages of 16-42 years  from Fanga, Matahau, Fo'ui and Sopu.
