PORT VILA, Vanuatu (Vanuatu Daily Post, May 23, 2017) – Air Niugini will begin commercial flights to Shanghai from December.

Airline CEO, Simon Foo, said the route would open up possibilities to all South Pacific destinations.

“The (Air Niugini) board has decided that we start operating into China. This is in line with the PNG government’s decision to develeop our tourism industry,” Foo said at the two-day South Pacific Tourism Exchange in Sydney, Australia.

“This new destination allows opportunities for partners operating out of the revamped Jackson’s International Airport (in Port Moresby.”

Air Niugini recently signed code share agreements with Solomon Airlines and Air Vanuatu who will be the first to benefit from the Shanghai route.

Foo said approaches had been made to Fiji Airways for code share agreements on the Nadi-Port Moresby sector.

Air Niugini is now the first Pacific airline to fly direct commercial flights to mainland China.

Fiji Airways and Air Niugini currently fly to Hong Kong. Fiji Airways also operates charter flights to Shanghai for inbound tour operator Rosie Holidays.
