Solomon Islands Western Province Bans Plastic Bags

Pollution has 'reached an epidemic proportion'

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, May 24, 2017) – The Western Provincial Government has announced a ban on plastic bags in the Western Province.

Premier Wayne Maepio made the announcement during the local ministerial and stakeholder meeting at the headquarters of the Western Province this week.

Mr Maepio said plastic bag pollution in the Western Province had reached an epidemic proportion.

He said his government had taken into account the adverse effects plastic bags pose on human health, the environment and marine seabed.

“A stakeholder committee has been established and they will be working on the time frame,” he said. “And we’re looking for other industries, such as the tourism industry, to help support us in this decision.”
