King Of Tonga Appoints Two New Members Of Privy Council

Lord Tangi of Vaonukonuka, Rev. Dr Tevita Koloa’ia Havea become new advisors to King Tupou VI

NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, May 29, 2017) – Two new members have been appointed by King Tupou VI to sit on the Privy Council.

Lord Tangi of Vaonukonuka and Rev. Dr Tevita Koloa’ia Havea will join an elite group of advisors.

Tonga's first five Law Lords were appointed by the late King George Tupou V to advise the King on the exercise of his judicial powers, and on matters relating to appointments, clemency, Royal Commissions and terms and conditions of the Judiciary and to also investigate complaints against judges. The role has changed over the years.

Lord Privy Seal, Viliami Malolo on 25 May announced the two new appointments - the first since 2011.

Lord Tangi, a former Minister of Health, is Chief Surgeon Specialist at Vaiola Hospital, Tonga.

Rev. Dr Tevita Koloa'ia Havea is a Moderator of the Pacific Conference of Churches, and a Chairman of Tonga’s National Retirement and Benefit Fund and Social Welfare Services for the elderly.

They will join two surviving law lords, Lord Tupou of Kolofo’ou and Lord Dalgety of Sikotilani Tonga.

Three other law lords appointed by Tupou V have passed away in recent years, Lord Taniela Tufui of Talaheu, Lord Madraiwiwi Tangatatonga and Baron Fielakepa of Havelu.
