New Caledonia Expands GMO Import Ban To Include All Seeds, Plants

Regulations in line with rest of European Union

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, June 7, 2017) – New Caledonia has further restricted the importation of genetically modified organisms.

The government has followed advice of a committee on plant protection and banned all GMO seeds and plants, including those destined for animal feed.

The ban earlier applied to modified fruits and grain seeds only.

A certificate will be required for imported plants to certify they are GMO-free.

The government said the new restrictions were in line with regulations in force in the European Union.
