Former PNG Border Development Authority CEO Fred Konga Killed In ‘Execution Style’ Shooting

Konga recently resigned from the PNG Border Development Authority to contest the Jiwaka regional seat in the 2017 National Elections, a motive for the killing has not been established

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, August 25, 2017) – Former Border Development Authority chief executive officer Fred Konga was gunned down in Port Moresby early yesterday morning.

According to senior police sources close to the investigation into the killing, Mr Konga, a prominent Jiwaka community leader, died several minutes after the shooting.

He was driving his four-door Suzuki motor vehicle and in the company of two male in-laws at the time of the shooting between 8pm and 1am in an apparent ambush.

They were making their way to the family residence at Hohola No.5 and travelling on the Poreporena Freeway from Central Waigani tunnel towards Hohola, when two unknown vehicles approached them from behind.

The first vehicle, believed to be a double-cab 4WD utility, drove up, overtook them and blocked the road near the Hastings Deering head office.

The second vehicle, a white Toyota Landcruiser, then approached from behind and its occupants shot Mr Konga, who was driving, at close range.

Mr Konga, managed to drive past the road block and turned back the vehicle towards Waigani Central by jumping over the traffic island to the other side of the Freeway but he came to a halt near the intersection opposite the RSPCA veterinary clinic that leads out to the Waigani Drive after feeling dizzy.

According to reports by the St John Ambulance officers who attended at the scene at 12.30am, Mr Konga had died from the gunshot wounds to his back and abdomen, while still seated in the driver’s seat.

The other two passengers in his vehicle were not injured during the shooting.

After shooting Mr Konga, the killers fled the scene in the two vehicles that they had arrived in.

Mr Konga’s body was taken to the Port Moresby General Hospital morgue about 1.49am by ambulance.

National Capital District metropolitan commander Chief Superintendent Ben Turi could not be reached for comments yesterday.

But according to the police source, a motive of the killing has not been established and an investigation is now underway.

Mr Konga, who is from the Tuman area of Anglimp-South Waghi, is a graduate electrical engineer from the University of Technology in Lae.

He recently resigned as the executive chairman and chief executive officer of the PNG Border Development Authority to contest the Jiwaka regional seat in the 2017 National Election.
