Refugee At PNG's Manus Asylum Center Found Dead

Sri Lankan apparently hung himself; second detainee suicide this year

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Oct. 6, 2017) – A refugee from the Manus asylum centre was found dead with a cloth tied around his neck in the early hours of Monday.

This is the second suicide in Manus this year; a refugee hung himself some months ago.

The deceased identified as Rajeev Rajendran, 33, from Tamil, Sri Lanka was admitted earlier to Lorengau General Hospital last Friday after he tried to harm himself with a razor.

Manus police commander Chief Inspector David Yapu said Rajendran attempted to harm himself by using a razor blade and was admitted.

His body was found at the laundry building in the early hours of Monday by the hospital staff who reported to police and Papua New Guinea Immigration and Citizenship Services Authority.

The forensic team from Port Moresby also attended to the scene and retrieved the body.

The body is placed in a temporary cooler at the hospital and will be taken to Port Moresby for autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Rajendran died awaiting his trial at the National Court from an incident he committed in January this year.

He was arrested for sexual penetration of minor in a hotel at Lorengau and was released on K2000 court bail and gone through the court process.

The Lorengau committal court found there was sufficient evidence and committed him to stand trial in the National Court.

Mr Yapu said Rajendran was supposed to appear in the National Court in Lorengau on the day he took his own life.
