PORT VILA, Vanuatu (December 31, 1999 – Radio Australia)---The Australian government has awarded scholarships to 25 indigenous Vanuatu teacher trainees at the Vanuatu Teachers College.

The students, who plan to begin their studies in January, will take courses leading to a two-year diploma under the Vanuatu-Australia Secondary Teachers Education Project

Another 50 trainees will enroll in the program in 2001.

The scholarship award is the result of negotiations among Vanuatu's Education Minister Jacques Sese, the Australian High Commissioner in Port Vila, Perry Head, and AusAID's first Secretary Geoff McConnel.
