Uata allegedly offered bribe to maritime official

NUKU΄ALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, March 3, 2010) - Tu΄i Uata of Uata Shipping Company, has been charged with bribery, the Tonga Police confirmed today.

He is the son of Uata Shipping Company owner and Ha΄apai People’s Representative ΄Uliti Uata.

Assistant Police Commander ΄Unga Fa΄aoa confirmed that Tu΄i was arrested by police on Monday, March 1. He appeared at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday March 2 and was released on bail set at $1,000 pa’anga with $800 pa΄anga each for the two sureties.

Fa΄aoa verified that the bribery charge is in relation to the attempted bribery of Commander Lupeti Vi.
